This rock is outside of Radium Springs, New Mexico. Legend has it that Dave Rudabaugh, Charlie Bowdre and William Bonney carved their initials into it around 1880. If you look very carefully, you can see an O and two N’s (quite faded). It is highly unlikely that these are authentic, but it makes for a great local tale!

Lucero was a former Dona Ana County sheriff in New Mexico. Wayne Brazel surrendered to him in 1908 after he shot and killed Pat Garrett outside of Las Cruces. Buried in Catholic cemetery there.
This buggy was used by John Poe, Lincoln County Sheriff in the 1880’s, to collect taxes. Poe was one of Pat Garrett’s deputies when Garrett shot Billy The Kid on July 14, 1881. He was later a banker in Roswell, New Mexico and died in 1923.

Billy Mathews rode with Sheriff Brady’s posse when they killed John Tunstall in 1878. This act started the Lincoln County War in New Mexico. Billy The Kid hated Mathews and wanted to avenge the death of Tunstall. This marker is in South Park Cemetery in Roswell, New Mexico.

Elizabeth Garrett was the daughter of Pat Garrett. she lost her sight at age 3 and spent her life working with the blind. She taught at the Blind School in Alamogordo, New Mexico and travelled the country doing inspirational appearances with Helen Keller. She also wrote the New Mexico State Song, Oh Fair New Mexico.
Sallie Robert (Chisum) was John Chisum’s niece. She was a close friend of Billy The Kid. Rests in the South Park Cemetery in Roswell, New Mexico.

Alexander McSween wrote this note to Colonel Dudley and staff at Fort Stanton during the peak of violence in the Lincoln County War in 1878. He did not understand why his house and property was being attacked by a small army of outlaws and troopers! McSween was killed during the fight.
This springs is 3 miles from the Stinking Springs hideout where Billy The Kid and his gang was captured by Pat Garrett and posse on December 23, 1880. Manuel Brazil told Pat that Billy was there. It is in Taiban, New Mexico.

Constable John Selman killed the legendary John Wesley Hardin at the Acme Saloon in El Paso, Texas in 1895. He is buried in the Concordia Cemetery a short distance from Hardin.
Cox owned the huge San Augustin Springs Ranch in The Organ Mountains near Las Cruces, New Mexico. He was suspected of being involved in the killing of Pat Garrett, but this is completely unsubstantiated. A large part of his ranch became part of White Sands Missile Range. Buried in The Masonic Cemetery in Las Cruces.
Warren Earp, Wyatt Earp’s youngest brother, was shot in Willcox, Arizona in 1900 by Cowboy Johnny Boyett. Warren rode with Wyatt during the Vendetta Ride. He is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Willcox.
On March 9, 1916 Pancho Villa, with 500 men, raided Columbus. 18 citizens were killed. Black Jack Pershing led a 10,000 man punitive expedition into Mexico. Lucinda’s grandfather was one of them!
This tower (Torreon) in Lincoln, New Mexico was constructed in the 1850’s to protect the settlers against Apache attacks. It was also used by sharpshooters for the Murphy-Dolan faction during the Lincoln County War.

Barney Mason was a good friend of Sheriff Pat Garrett. He rode with Pat’s posse when they captured Billy the Kid. He is buried in The Union Cemetery in Bakersfield, California
Juana was the wife of Barney Mason, who was a close friend of Pat Garrett. In fact, Juana and Barney were married in a double ceremony with Pat and Apolinaria Garrett in Anton Chico, New Mexico in 1880. She is buried in Bakersfield, California.

James Carlyle was killed in a shootout with Billy the Kid and his gang at The Greathouse Way Station outside of Corona, New Mexico in 1880. We finally placed a stone at his gravesite on August 6, 2022.
These combined history groups placed a stone for Deputy James Carlyle who was killed in 1880 by Billy the Kid and his gang at the Greathouse Way Station during a shootout with a posse. The grave had been unmarked for 142 years.
This old corral at Fritz Springs, New Mexico was used by Billy the Kid and his gang to keep stolen horses in 1880.
This spot is the location of Whisky Jim Greathouse’s saloon and waystation where Billy the Kid and his gang had shootout with a posse from White Oaks, New Mexico in November of 1880. Some of the foundation is still visible. It was burned to the ground right after the shootout.

This is the newly placed marker for former Billy the Kid gang member, Tom Pickett, in the Desert View Cemetery in Winslow, Arizona.
I found this 45-70 shell casing at the ruins of Mason’s Fort outside of Las Cruces, New Mexico. It was used in this Springfield Trapdoor Rifle dated 1873. There were several fights between Victorio’s Apaches and the settlers at that location.
The ruins of Mason’s Fort near Las Cruces, New Mexico. It was an important Stage and water stop along the Butterfield Overland Trail from 1862-1883.
This Stage and water stop along the Butterfield Overland Trail was the site of a deadly fight between travelers (including Johnny Ringo) and Chief Victorio’s Apaches in the late 1870’s. There were dozens of these encounters between 1862 to 1883.
The historic Gadsden Hotel in Douglas, Arizona was opened in 1902. Pancho Villa once rode his horse up this marble staircase and chipped off corners of it. It was seen in the Western film “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean” when Paul Newman as Bean descended it. There is a speakeasy in the basement.
I am honored to have been presented with this sculpture of Sheriff Pat Garrett which was commissioned by Pat’s Great Grandson. It is based on a tintype of Pat from around 1878.

On February 18, 1878, John Henry Tunstall was murdered at the site near Glencoe, New Mexico. He and his cowhands, including Billy the Kid, were bringing a herd of horses into Lincoln. This cold-blooded killing started the Lincoln County War!
